Hi! My name is Mark Evertz and I am pursuing my Masters of Education at SUNY Oswego. My content area is Biology. I decided to become a teacher after volunteering and substituting in a facility called BUBL (Bathysphere Underwater Biological Laboratory). This facility is run by Monroe County BOCES and it is an integrated math and science facility studying Lake Ontario. I enjoyed sharing my love for science and working with the students so much I decided to pursue it as a career path. I have also worked at a kids/ teen camp for the past few years and enjoyed my work with those age groups. SO it has reinforced my desire to be a teacher.

There have been a number of people who have influenced me over the years, but my parents have always been a stabilizing force for me. They are the people I bounce ideas off to make sure I am in a realm of reasonability. Most of the attributes that I possess which are beneficial to teaching have been instilled in me by my mother. She is also a teacher and raised us as her students. So I have been watching teachers since the day I was born.

A couple attributes I believe I bring to teaching are my structured style and my ability to create a controlled learning environment. I also bring to the table a passion for science and learning, especially biology. I have high expectations for all my students because I am I first hand example of what a lower end student can achieve once they are sparked. I also bring to the table unique science experiences. Most notable was when I worked as a black bear research technician, which involved the capture and tracking of black bears on a military instillation. This was an amazing experience that I hope sparks some students’ interest in science.

My long term goals for the next five to ten years would be to have my teaching certification and be tenured in a school district full of exciting young people. I hope my classroom is one in which students enjoy coming into because they know they will learn something new about the world we live in. I also would love to be coaching volleyball in that school district too. My ambitions as an educator are to incorporate as much hands-on and outside the classroom learning as possible into the curriculum I am teaching. It was under these circumstances in which I fell in love with biology, so I would like to share that with my students. I also have considered the idea of administration, but I am unsure about it. The reason I pursued teaching was because of my passion for science and the enjoyment I received from sharing that with students. So I would have to feel really called towards the administration aspect to leave teaching.
