Standard 1: Content Pedagogy

Standard 1:  Content Pedagogy

Description: ”The teacher understands the central concepts, tools of inquiry, and structures of the discipline he or she teaches and can create learning experiences that make these aspects of subject matter meaningful for students”.

Reflection: In order to create an authentic learning experience for ones students, the teacher must first understand the concepts and information they intend to teacher their student. As both a student and professional of biology I have learned and applied the central concepts of biology. In my experience the best way to learn a new concept was by seeing and doing.  The one of the most important concepts for students to learn in school is the scientific method. By allowing students to do hands-on lab work using this method, it will hone their inquiry skills which will serve them for the rest of their lives.

Evidence: As a graduate of the State University of New York at Cobleskill with Bachelors of Technology in Wildlife Management, I have spent time in both the classroom, labratory, and in the field learning and applying. Science is not best learned from a book. It is best learned by experiencing it. After graduation I worked in the field on a scientific research project which continued to hone and apply many of the concepts I learned in my undergrad. I am currently working on my Master of Education at the State Univiersity of New York at Oswego.
