Standard 10: School and Community Involvement

Standard 10:  School and Community Involvement

Description:  “The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students’ learning and well being.”

Reflection: The education of our youth is a group effort. Its is not just the job of schools and teachers. Parents, communities, and coaches are all very important in the education process. So as a teacher being at the center of education young people it is important to help facilitate these other groups involvement in the education process. The most important relationship outside of the classroom for teachers are their students parents or guardians. Students spend more time with teachers and parents than any other group. So it is important that they are on the same page, proceeding towards the same goals. Email is probably the largest advancement for the relationship between teachers and parents since the invention of the telephone. So it is important that it is taken full advantage of. Also have a class website for students to access class information from home after school hours or if they miss school. Involving the community in classrooms helps students see the relevance and importance of the material by showing them community leaders who think it is important also.

Evidence: I have not had a classroom of my own to put these ideas in to action yet. However I fully intend to make sure my classroom is connected with the outside world, because students need to understand that what we are doing inside the school building will have an impact on what they do on the outside of the school building for the rest of their lives
