Standard 2: Student Development

Standard 2:  Student Development

Description:  “The teacher understands how children learn and develop and can provide learning opportunities that support a child’s intellectual, social, and personal development”.

Reflection: As a teacher it is as important to understand my content area as it is to understand the students I plan on teaching. It is important for teachers to be familiar with types of student learners as well as methods most effective for teaching them. Also every student is a unique case. Which means as a teacher I need to be constantly monitoring my students so if adjustments in my instruction need to be made I will be aware of it. It is also important to keep up with current research regarding teaching methods and learning styles.

Evidence: As part of my course work at Cobleskill and Oswego I have taken an Intro to psychology course, an adolescent psychology course, Literacy courses, and an exceptional student course. All of these courses have increased my knowledge of a student body made up of many different types of learners. These courses also taught me multiple methods of diversifying instruction in order to be the most effective teacher to the whole student body.
